Red Wings stay at No. 9 in NHL Draft Lottery

Another year, another disappointing result for the Red Wings at the NHL Draft Lottery.

Monday night, the NHL unveiled the results of its annual lottery system to determine which club receives the No. 1 overall pick – this year being the ‘which team will get phenom Connor Bedard?’ edition.

The Red Wings started the night in the No. 9 spot, and that’s where they stayed. Detroit had a 5 percent chance of moving up to the No. 1 spot, but that lucky outcome went to the Chicago Blackhawks, as the Wings’ Original Six rival jumped from No. 3 to  No. 1 with some franchise-changing luck.

Despite the Red Wings’ struggles over the last decade, they have been unable to select higher than No. 4 overall, after a string of unfortunate results at the lottery each and every spring.

The 2023 NHL Draft takes place June 28-29 in Nashville; Detroit holds the No. 18 pick alongside the No. 9 pick, thanks to the Filip Hronek trade. That pick could move up to No. 17 if the Florida Panthers continue having postseason success.
